A more sustainable energy future

As Australia transitions towards a more sustainable energy future, we at Nathan Contractors are proud to be at the forefront, playing a pivotal role in the integration and distribution of renewable energy. Our significant contributions to several major substation projects across the country highlight our expertise, reliability, and unwavering commitment to excellence in the energy sector.

The Macintyre Wind Farm, one of the largest onshore wind farms globally, is a testament to our capabilities. This monumental project, located south-west of Warwick in Queensland and developed by ACCIONA in partnership with CleanCo and Ark Energy, aims to generate 1,026MW of renewable energy—enough to power 630,000 homes and significantly reduce carbon emissions. At Nathan Contractors, we have been instrumental in the construction of two key substations for this project. Our scope of work includes constructing 40 structures, such as Switch Room Buildings, Distribution Buildings, Auxiliary Transformer Buildings, and Control Room Buildings. This extensive task involves placing and finishing 1,260 cubic meters of concrete and tying 230 tonnes of steel reinforcement over 83,000 labor hours. Despite facing challenges like extreme heat and bushfires, we have consistently met major milestones, ensuring the project stays on track. Our ability to adapt and expand our scope—taking on detailed earthworks, backfilling, and conduit installation—showcases our comprehensive service offerings and our commitment to client satisfaction.

Facing challenges

At Clarke Creek, near Rockhampton, Queensland, we have undertaken another significant project involving the construction of three substations (North, Central, and South) to support 100 wind turbines. Our extensive civil works include earthworks, formwork, reinforcing steel, and concrete works, alongside the installation of conduits, drainage, and stormwater systems. Over the 21-month project duration, we faced considerable challenges, such as wet weather, extreme heat, and logistical hurdles. However, our unwavering commitment to quality and safety, coupled with efficient resource management, ensured the project’s successful completion. The scope of work was extended by 300% due to our exemplary performance, reinforcing our reputation for reliability and excellence. This project contributes to generating 450MW of electricity, enough to power approximately 330,000 homes, and plays a vital role in reducing annual carbon emissions by 738,000 tonnes. Our respectful engagement with the local Barada Kabalbara Yetimarala (BKY) communities underscores our commitment to positive community relations and environmental stewardship.

Dedicated effort

We also played a crucial role in the construction of the Buronga Substation, the largest substation in the southern hemisphere with an 800MW capacity. Engaged by the Secure Energy Joint Venture (SEJV), our responsibilities included constructing large concrete structures such as synchronous condensers footings, building slabs, and transformer foundations. The project scope involved the supply and installation of formwork, steel reinforcement, and concrete, alongside the placement of precast pits, grates, bolts, covers, and cable trenches. Despite challenges posed by extreme weather conditions and complex logistical requirements, we delivered the project on schedule, adhering to the highest standards of quality and safety. Our innovative approach to construction, particularly in the continuous pouring of the Syncon Building Slab, significantly advanced the project schedule. Our ability to adapt to changing scopes and efficiently manage resources across multiple structures further solidified our partnership with SEJV, ensuring the successful completion of this landmark project.

At Nathan Contractors, we have proven to be a reliable and innovative partner in the construction of critical substation infrastructure for some of Australia’s largest renewable energy projects. Our expertise in managing complex projects, commitment to safety and quality, and ability to foster strong client relationships make us an invaluable contributor to Australia’s renewable energy future. Through our dedicated efforts on the Macintyre, Clarke Creek, and Buronga substation projects, we continue to support the nation’s transition to sustainable energy, driving positive environmental and economic impacts.
